We ♥ Japan Day 2 - 日本の旅行
Woah! It has been a blink of an eye since 53 days ago I was living my vacation trip in Japan. I know I have been a really slow *poke* in updating about my vacation trip here. Apologies! But don’t worry, I will definitely finish blogging about the entire trip. Nothing less :P So stay tuned!
29 December 2011 Itinerary
- [Sight Seeing] Tsukiji Market: Salmon Don, Tea
- [Store Visiting] Ginza: Apple flagship store, A&F, Muji, Uniqlo
- [Shopping] Harajuku: Takeshita Doori, Uniqlo UT, Harajuku Station
Waking up to a brand new day of exploration! ^^ This was the view from inside of my hotel window before the sun rises. It was a really blissful feeling waking up to the first dawn in a country I had am still dreaming of.

On the second day of our Japan vacation trip, we had planned mainly to go shopping and sight-seeing around famous places in Tokyo (Refer to the bullet points above for details).
On our way to Tsukiji Market from Ikebukuro
Being a salmon lover (more for Chris lol), we had always thought of how different would the taste of the salmon in Japan compare to the usual imported ones we eat in Singapore so visiting the Tsukiji Market was definitely on our itinerary. I read online about how packed and crowded Tsukiji Market restaurants could get and so we decided to set off really early on that day.
This is the Ikebukuro street near our hotel which we passed by to get to the train station.

It was really nice to witness the orderly morning crowd for the first time. The weather was great and I was adapting alright to the single digit weather.
And here we were at Ikebukuro Station.

Hello! Sometimes the underground tunnel can get super windy in Japan. There he was wearing my H&M floppy hat! :P Travelling with him is always FUN!

Getting to Tsukiji Market for breakfast

We reached Tsukiji Station and made our way to the Tsukiji Market by relying on his mobile phone’s GPS and Google map.
And we reached!

About Tsukiji Fish Market: The Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market (東京都中央卸売市場 Tōkyō-to Chūō Oroshiuri Shijō), commonly known as the Tsukiji Market (築地市場 Tsukiji shijō), is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world and also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind. The market is located in Tsukiji in central Tokyo, and is a major attraction for foreign visitors. (Source: Wikipedia)
Look at the crowd!

Of course there were seafood everywhere.

We seemed to walk into the lane where people were busying loading their products.

And after exploring the area, we went around to search for a Japanese restaurant for a salmon feast.

Here is the lane where we saw some promising restaurants and one of the restaurants(I think it is Sushi Dai) was so popular with its queue stretched all the way to the road! Of course we didn’t join in the queue because we didn’t want to wait.
And guess what I saw outside of the super long queue restaurant? It was a photograph of Nat Ho, a Singaporean actor, who was featured as one of their celebrity customers! Seriously, it makes me wonder how on earth did they get to know who Nat Ho was?! You mean Japanese do watch Singapore TV shows? #mystery unsolved

Anyway… We decided on this restaurant, Dontaku, and this was my first cultural shock encounter which still remains very vivid in my mind LOL!
Stressful moment eating inside a traditional Japanese restaurant

About Dontaku Restaurant: Dontaku is a small sushi restaurant located in the inner market area of Tsukiji Fish Market. Primarily serving chirashi-sushi, this small restaurant seats no more than 10 people. They have a limited menu of 15 types of chirashi-sushi, while supplies last. Prices are affordable from 1000yen to 2500yen, and always depend on the type of fish in the dish. (Higher quality fish will always bring up the prices.) Friendly staff and chef run this sushi bar. They speak little English, but are well-accustomed to tourists as it is in the tourist are aof Tsukiji Fish Market, and only a few doors down to the more well-known sushi bar, Sushi Dai, with a long line and waiting time of more than 90 minutes. (Source: ellechic @Travbuddy)
There was no queue when we went into Dontaku Restaurant so we got our seats immediately. Here is how Dontaku Restaurant looked like from inside at 8.38 a.m.

What you are seeing above is the whole of the restaurant. It was really small and could accommodate less than 10 people at a time but I am not complaining because it was such a unique dining experience! I liked how polite these chefs were for greeting customers who came in.
Anyway just a tip, if you completely foreign to Japanese language, just order Salmon Don and you will be alright. Remember not to order Sashimi Don though it may be called as that in your local Japanese restaurant because it literally translates into raw fish rice bowl and you are not doing them a favor by telling them exactly the type of fish you want in your rice bowl.
This is what I ordered, Salmon Don. It was quite nice. Honestly, I do not think there is any difference between the salmon sold in Japan and the usual Japanese restaurants I go to in Singapore.

And the moment of cultural shock! Everything went on smoothly, from ordering food till waiting for our food to be served, until!!!! The moment when the crowd started streaming in.
The restaurant seats started getting filled up real fast and eventually got full house with a crowd forming behind of us (we were seated directly with our back facing the slide door). Around say 15 minutes into our breakfast, a few customers who came after us had already left the restaurant with amazingly fast eating speed and the pressure to leave the restaurant asap for waiting customers was freaking REAL! I swear I was FREAKED OUT! Having the luxury of space and time to savoring food in Singapore restaurant ain’t preparing me for this. I tried as fast as possible to quicken my eating speed. I need to brush up on my eating speed lol! It was truly a very memorable dining experience. People were really considerate to fasten their eating speed for waiting customers and waiting patiently for their turns to get seated.
And after our breakfast, we explored the other lanes and was very surprised to see interesting stalls like this bookshop.

Saw some interesting toy too like this! Tap Tap Tap!
And there he was at a pottery shop buying gifts for our parents.

Be careful when you walk around these areas!

Done exploring Tsukiji Market and on our way out, we saw this visitor notice.

And something funny we spotted here! All restrictions were represented with an icon except one which is a drunkard! Makes me wonder why didn’t they illustrate a drunkard. Perhaps it is offensive?! Hmm

Cute billboard we saw.

Off we go to the next stop via train.

And I noticed there were mirror stands and water tap inside the station! Cool!

And there was kiosk next to the station platform! How cool is that to be able to eat inside the train (against law in Singapore MRT stations)?!

Off to Ginza for shopping
Both of us wanted to visit the home outlet of several Japanese brands we know of and Ginza houses most of them.

Ginza feels much more modern and westernized to me as compared to Ikebukuro area given that it is more upscale.

We were definitely early with most boutiques closing at this timing so we walked around to explore the street. Saw this really cool street clock which tells time and date. It was also cool to see Japan flag hung everywhere along this lane. According to Chris, the flags were there to celebrate New Year.

And off to Apple flagship store.

It was my first time visiting a Apple flagship store since Singapore doesn’t have one. Quite an eye-opener. Let’s hear what he has to say about this flagship store :D
And next stop, Uniqlo at Ginza!

We also visited the Muji Ginza outlet!
We also went into A&F but didn’t take any picture as it was not permitted.

Ah, the loud music, low lighting and strong A&F perfume smell was making me very uncomfortable. Done with shopping with A&F and he bought a shirt.
Then we noticed that this pathway was separated into 2 lanes for cyclist and pedestrians. Such a systematic arrangement to ensure the safety of its citizen. Oh, he is demonstrating! :P

And that is pretty much it for Ginza shopping trip.
Next stop is none other than Harajuku!
Shopping at Takeshita Dori, Harajuku
Gorgeous Gorgeous Gorgeous Harajuku station!!!

View of the Harajuku street. On our way to Takeshita Dori~
Finally Takeshita Dori! I love this place!!!!! Look at how cute the Takeshita Dori street sign is.

This street sign will be redecorated according to festival and here we are seeing Xmas deco. And as you can see, it was quite crowded when we got there.

The very first shop you will see is AKB48 shop! They are everywhere :O

Crepes! I heard a lot about Takeshita Dori crepes and had been planning for this day to try one myself! I picked Sweet Box crepes and recommend you to go there!

Look at the flavours they have here! At this point in time, I realised there was a lot of young teenagers around the street.

Finally after some struggling(serious!), I decided to go for Tiramisu Crepe.

It was topped with whipped cream. Can’t wait to try it!

The Tiramisu crepe was really delicious! There is really a tiramisu cake stuffed inside the crepe and I loved it! Yum yum! I decided that it was too inconvenient and inconsiderate to eat and shop at the same time so I sat at a corner to finish this crepe up before moving on to shop. Right where I was seated at is a super interesting spot where everywhere I look I see something I love!

Very near to where I rested was SBY Happy Room. I love SBY Happy Room!!!! And these shop staffs were preparing the Fukubukuro bags! So interesting!

And I think I spotted this shop staff wearing Loveswig X Kumiki wig! It wouldn’t be a surprise since SBY carries Loveswig! And I love her dressing style!

And right where I am seated in front is a shop selling contact lenses. I went in and man, those lenses are pricey but I am sure they are authentic.

In front of me is a shop selling…….
WIGS!

Wigs! Peach Bee wigs.

Nothing that really caught my eyes though. It was interesting experience for me to visit a Japanese wig shop.
And we spent some time shopping around Takeshita Dori and I got the chance to visit boutiques I read on magazine like WEGO. Will definitely go back there in my next trip.
Next we went to UT Uniqlo at Harajuku along Meji Dori. That’s the only Uniqlo store where you can buy tees inside plastic canisters!
Notice the all-English words running on the ticker? It really makes me wonder it was intentional to bring up the image of uniqlo by westernising the brand because I really doubt most Japanese can understand it.

It looks really cool from the shop front. The interior is just as cool! :D
After shopping, we decided to go back to Ikebukuro for dinner. On our way back, I saw Japanese cosmetic Kiss Me Heroine mobile advertisement.

And a really funky guy with his 2 dogs on the street.

Back to Ikebukuro where we were looking for a Japanese ramen restaurant.
We decided on Ganko Ramen at Ikebukuro. You see the bone and black tarp? It is their trademark! Looks scary though eh?

There we were making order via the vending machine.

This ramen restaurant is sure popular with celebrities like Kenny G and Martha Stewart visiting.

We ordered the Shoyu ramen, I think.

It was quite delicious ~
Lastly, I went to Ikebukuro Parco to visit….

Emoda outlet! This outlet has items which Shibuya 109 was running out.

Went back to my hotel after this.
Last picture before ending this post. I am wearing Loveswig x Kumicky Mode wig and love its quality. If you are interested, you can get it here.

Watch out for my day 3 update. I hope I get to do it soon!
Love Japan. And the fun continues~~~
We ♥ Japan Day 1 - 日本の旅行 - 渋谷109
28 December 2011 Itinerary
- Sunshine City Prince Hotel, Ikebukuro check-in
- Shibuya 109 Shopping - EMODA
Flight Landing
The flight landing was a smooth one and I remembered the euphoria upon seeing Japanese houses from above. Those houses around Narita Airport were neatly organized in clusters and loosely scattered across the huge piece of land. I also remembered seeing a super huge anti-airport protest poster put up near the airport runway. Quite shocked but I can understand why. And finally, the flight came to a halt at around 9.10a.m. local time. We had safety reached Japan, the land of rising sun! <3
Reaching Narita Airport and Hotel Check-in
Here we are at Narita Airport~!! But first, we need to purchase Nex ticket to get from airport to Ikebukuro so off we went to search for the ticketing booth~

Guess what was the reason behind his smile of amazement? That was because we were surprised by how well the wheels gripped onto the escalator despite being really narrow! I was even dubious when the staff signaled me to use the escalator for our trolley and I went 本当?本当(Really)?

And we reached the JR East Travel Service Center where we purchased Suica & Nex combo plus the two day unlimited pass. The counter staffs were able to converse in English so do not worry if you are planning to buy tickets there.

This is how the Suica and NEX combo ticket looks like and our Nex Car Number(cabin?) was 7.

The not-so-intimidating train map for the time-being, lol! Before this vacation, he couldn’t stop emphasizing how complicated Japan transportation system was!

There he was familiarising himself to the railway lines. So grateful to have him! While he was busying looking at the map, I saw an enclosed waiting room with heater right in front of me. It is such a nice facility to have, especially during the winter!

I explored further around the waiting area and saw a double decker train. Never seen a double decker train before, or maybe I did at Finland hmm…

And this picture of the train conductor saluting the moving train says how much pride and respect they have towards their job.
And then I spotted a full touch-screen drink vending machine! Think of how convenient and easy it would be to update new drinks into the machine! Super high-tech and so fun to watch! Recommended drinks are those with red tags; it reads osusume~
And so our train came on time! A point to note, if you are later than 5 minutes for your ride, chances are you will miss your train completely! My point is never be late for your train ride. At Japan, punctuality is beyond virtue and is an integral part of their daily life. Love that transportation is a serious business at Japan. I even read that train companies have instituted a “dely fee” of approximately 100 million yen (1 million dollars) that must be paid by the families of those who chose to use the trains as their means of suicide.
Anyway, here is a video of the beautiful scenery we saw from the train.
And yes, you heard someone letting out a loud squeak towards the end of the station jingles and no, it wasn’t us but some random passenger! Someone got freaked out by the departure jingles from his sleep and jumped out of his seat! Poor thing haha! Oh by the way, JR East has got different departure jingles and how cute can this country get?!!! I need to go back now T-T It sure brings back AWESOME memories now that I am hearing some of those familiar jingles thinking back of the past!

This country is so beautiful!

And the hotel where we were staying at was at Ikebukuro. This ride was about about 1 hr 40 mins, from Narita Airport to Ikebukuro station. Most of the time on the Nex train I was sleeping away as the lack of sleep was totally taking a toll on me. And ok, fast forward a little to … Reaching Ikebukuro Station. Guess what I saw when I alighted? Cosme store!
I believe this is somehow related to @cosme, a very well known Japanese cosmetics and skincare review website. It was cool seeing something I know online coming to life.

Dinner at Nantsuttei Ikebukuro (なんつッ亭池袋店)
Out to hunt for Nantsuttei Ramen restaurant at Ikebukuro! My boyfriend is a ramen addict and prior to this trip, we came to know of its Singapore outlet and we went and loved it! So searching for its home outlet in Japan was definitely part of our itinerary!
It was my first time seeing so many neon boards.

And with Google map, we managed to locate for its Ikebukuro outlet!

Ordering food was both a fun and challenging experience! Here in Japan, you do not order your ramen from the waiter/waitress but make your order from a ramen ordering vending machine which is often near the entrance. These ordering machines require you to slot in your money and this is followed by pressing the buttons labelled with the food item names you want. After completing the process, you will receive an order slip which looks like this. I ordered their special plus Gyoza~

And after getting seated, you will have to put your order slip near the edge of the table, closest to where the chef is hard at work.

And here comes our ramen! Our order was served quick as there wasn’t a lot of customers at that time.

We always like our egg to be runny, soft and sticky on its egg yolk. Yummy!

YUMMY!!!! ANd gyoza!!! We first tried their Gyoza at their Singapore outlet as free food for waiting and loved it sooo much!

It is so yummy!!!! Plus these gyoza looks so cute being stuck together into one row. Off topic, I bought a gyoza HP miniature haha! Reminds me of this meal.
Love how you will never have to ask for ice water in restaurants at Japan. They serve you one kettle full of water! Free serving!

Vedict?

We had high expectation from its home outlet and wasn’t disappointed at all! The noodle serving and ingredient was so much more generous that its Singapore counterpart. I swear we are not small eaters but this serving was a little too much for us to handle but we are loving it! Super value for money and keeps you full for a long time! I recommend this ramen restaurant to people who are visiting Japan.
Next, where else but Shibuya 109 to fulfill my EMODA shopping wish?!!! Let’s go~

At Ikebukuro Station. And here we were at
.
.
.
SHIBUYA 109, the shopping paradise

It is the famous Shibuya 109 building, without any posters on the building front!!! Before arriving here, both of us were guessing who would be the one gracing the building!
And everyone looking super fashionable! Yes, it is true that at Shibuya, you can catch an abundant of people with good looks within a stone throw. Woot!

It was actually nice seeing Shibuya 109 without any posters.

And I had finally reached EMODA outlet! I made it!!!

Just.. just look at their shop staffs! Aint they pretty?! Yes, very! I love how well they represent this brand with their makeup too!
Turns out this outlet wasn’t as big as I imagined it to be. There were some sales going on at that time.

Ena Matsumoto everywhere I turn! Those clothes I saw her wearing on her blog were all right in front of me. Plus the shop staffs were super polite and greeting anyone who came in. Some of them came up to me and spoke a lot of Japanese and I believe they were promoting their items.
I just nodded my head and pretended like I understand what they were trying to say, lol!

Yeah, super happy and Chris took a quick snapshot of me with EMODA’s clothes. In Shibuya 109, we are not supposed to take pictures at all but seriously, with all the photos leaking out of Shibuya 109, how strict is this regulation?
I ended up buying 1 necklace and hair band in a single purchase, which I will blog more about separately. These were small items so I was seriously in shock when they package my hair band and necklace SEPERATELY into an EMODA accessory drawstring bag each! How generous! And these accessory drawstring bag are really pretty! Yes, I will blog abt it soon.
Super happy and there were no sight of EMODA Fukubukuro still.
Next, the SBY Shibuya outlet where all the latest gyaru cosmetics and all sorts of fashion products come under one roof!

And guess what? I was SOOOO HAPPY to see Loveswig x Kumicky wig series which I blogged about earlier here!!!! Finally get to see them at SBY Shibuya! I bought 2 of its wigs which I am hoping to blog soon.

And here at SBY Shibuya, they have nicely set up a small makeup corner where you can try some of the latest gyaru products for free! Here is one of the videos I made there!

Really beautiful Shibuya 109 pillar! And I am done with my shopping! Next, we moved on to find a cafe for coffee and cake.

And that is Galaxy Nexus advertisement we were hoping to see at JP.
And we decided on Italian Tomato Cafe.

I ordered Latte Caramel Macchiato and Mont Blanc.

I am super in love with their Latte Caramel Macchiato! Love the whip cream on top of the coffee! It was also my first time trying Mont Blanc and I really loved it! I am such a coffee and cake person! Give me this set, anytime!

Super happy~
And they have 2 storeys, one for non-smoking and one for smoking. And yes, we were seated nearest to the staircase and basement smelled like “dungeon”.

And after the great coffee and cake session, we moved to none other than Don Quijote Ikebukuro, Donki in short, a discount chain store carrying a wide range of products, from basic groceries to electronics to clothings. Cosmetics are said to be more affordable there.

I end up not buying anything from there on day 1 as I was still on price watching mode.
Hoping to blog about day 2 soon! Crosses fingers! And the fun continues~
Pre-Japan Preparation and Journey to Japan
It is much to my excitement to start writing about my 8 days 7 nights Japan vacation! Finally, I had always imagined visiting Japan and hoped for that one day to blog about my dream vacation here. But now that it is happening, I am feeling that tinge of bittersweet as it reminds me, once again, that my dream vacation is a thing of the past. Looking back, I remember the frustrating wait spent counting down from 200+ days and the euphoria when the countdown reached to a single digit. All the time spent planning for my itinerary and outfit was worth it! The vacation was beyond awesomeness, full of surprises and culture shock, and even the tiredness from shuffling between places made up the fun we had there.

This dream vacation was truly a blast and my boyfriend and I enjoyed discovering something unique and beautiful about Japan everyday. I will blog about them here in separate blog posts. ^^
Now before the actual blog post, here is the background preparation work we done prior to the trip which I would like to share a little here.
Flight and Accommodation
Purchase website: http://www.zuji.com.sg/
Price: SGD1189.855 nett per pax (2 Indirect Flight Tickets & 7 nights of 1 standard twin room)
Flight: CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES Economy Seat
Hotel: Sunshine City Prince Hotel, Ikebukuro
Days: 8 days 7 nights
Many told me I had gotten myself a real great flight and accommodation deal, which I agree too but it is not without any trade-off. Indirect flight was quite an unbearable experience and I spent around 2-3 hours at China Pudong for my second flight leg. The reason why I went for indirect flight was because of the price and arrival time. This flight schedule was such that we reached Narita Airport at approximately 12.50p.m Tokyo time.
For my transit, there were free internet access at China Pudong but Facebook and Twitter were blocked by the Great Firewall of China so there was little I could do to pass time while I was there. China Eastern Airline isn’t as bad an airline as most would think of and I liked that their services were pretty good. But the little seat pitch we had, lack of personal in-flight entertainment TV console made it a little uncomfortable. Overall it was bearable and acceptable for the good price that we were paying for the 8 days worth of fun.
Here are some pictures we took before we reached Narita Airport. ^^
Angry Bird gallery at Changi Airport

Believe me, you know you are in Singapore when every corner you turn to, you get to see Angry Bird merchandises. The Angry Bird craze has been going around in Singapore for quite some time and now, even Singapore Terminal 3 is using it as marketing gimmick. For me, I think they are cute!

But for those kids, it seems like their favourite! LOL!

And along the way, we saw mobile phone charging booth with locker which seemed like a GREAT IDEA!

Except that it didn’t work. -.-
And fast-forward a little, we were queuing up to get onboard! It is always better to be at the other side of the glass panel. Missing it now T-T

And then we touched down at China Pudong safety at about 6.20 a.m. local time.

We decided to have some breakfast first.

The coffee was quite good but the xiao long bao was so so.
And onto our second flight leg.

And off we go to the clear blue sky~

And he pointed out the metal rim turns black.

And the plane was on its way to landing!!!

And we had finally reached Japan! To be continued soon! <3
